This statement outlines our current approach to the sourcing of fire door products, the materials contained within those products, and the practical considerations associated with their disposal at the end of their service life.

Fire Door Supply Chain

Elite Fire Doors Ltd currently sources all fire door products exclusively from Modulo, a manufacturer operating within the Selo Group. Modulo is an established supplier of certified fire-resistant door assemblies designed and manufactured to meet applicable UK and European fire safety standards, including third-party certification where required.

Materials and Environmental Considerations

Modulo fire doors supplied to Elite Fire Doors Ltd are predominantly timber-based products. The principal structural components typically include engineered timber cores and timber facings, supplemented by steel ironmongery and specialist fire-performance materials. Where specified, timber is sourced from responsibly managed supply chains, supporting the use of renewable raw materials.

Steel components such as hinges, locks, latches, and door closers are inherently durable and recyclable, allowing for material recovery at the end of product life. These characteristics contribute positively to the overall environmental profile of the door assembly.

Fire Performance and Material Constraints

The primary function of a fire door is life safety. As such, fire-resistance performance requirements necessitate the inclusion of specialist materials that are not readily recyclable. These include, but are not limited to, intumescent strips and seals, fire-rated glazing systems, bonding adhesives, resins, laminates, paints, and protective coatings.

These materials are integral to the certified performance of the door and cannot be substituted without compromising compliance. Consequently, fire doors are composite products by design, and are not generally marketed or classified as fully environmentally friendly or fully recyclable items.

End-of-Life Management and Disposal

At the end of their operational service life, fire doors are assessed for appropriate disposal in accordance with waste management best practice. Elite Fire Doors Ltd recognises the importance of maximising material recovery where practicable while acknowledging the technical limitations imposed by composite construction.

Removal of Non-Recyclable and Recyclable Components

The following components can typically be removed manually prior to disposal:

– Steel ironmongery, including hinges, locks, latches, and door closers

– Intumescent strips and seals

– Fire-rated glazing units, where fitted

The removal of these accessible components typically requires approximately 15–30 minutes per door, dependent on the configuration, size, and presence of glazing. Removal beyond this level is not commercially viable due to the bonded nature of door cores and facings.

Waste Streams and Recovery Routes

Following the removal of recyclable metal components, remaining door leaf materials are managed through appropriate waste streams. In most cases, this includes downcycling or processing via energy-from-waste facilities. These routes support the recovery of embodied energy while ensuring compliance with environmental and waste regulations.
